Beware of the 9 Most Common Mistakes Patients Make
When Seeking Pain Relief

Using medications for pain relief feels like second nature because we live in a society well-educated by drug consumer ads.

This is combined with the fact there are many over-the-counter pain relievers, (called OTC's), like aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen that can be quickly and cheaply acquired for pain relief.

The cost and ease of acquiring OTC's also promotes a false sense of safety in using pain relievers,

It is easy to see how we have a drug culture for medicating unwanted symptoms.

This is unfortunate because the typical American diet is loaded with foods that actually worsen pain levels. The typical diet increases prostaglandin which is the chemical that causes pain.

Prostaglandin is the very chemical you are treating with pain relievers to fight inflammation. Yet many people's diets continue to spin out prostaglandins from fatty foods, simple carbohydrates, high fructose corn syrup, and animal products faster than the pain relievers can cover it up.

Drugs people take for other conditions can also exacerbate pain because of their link to prostaglandin and inflammation.

Then complicate this food and drug scene with the fact that very few people know much about good body mechanics or exercise and you will find a LOT of people who are failing to get pain relief.

Alarmingly, using pain relievers as an ongoing strategy for pain relief increases your risk for cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Consider these statistics that were published in well-respected medical journals:

  • Death from Ulcers

36,500 deaths occur each year in the US due to stomach bleeding from taking over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers. That's 100 people every day. And that statistic ONLY includes stomach bleeding as a cause of death! (New England Journal of Medicine 6/17/99 Wolfe, Lichtenstein & Singh)

  • First Heart Attack

Use of any NSAIDS to relieve pain leads to a 40% increased risk of first heart attack (European Heart Journal 5/26/2006)

  • Breast Cancer Risk

Using ibuprofen daily for 5 years or more led to 50% increased risk of breast cancer over those who didn't use it

Using aspirin daily for 5 years or more led to an 80% increased risk of breast cancer over those who didn't use it (Journal of the National Cancer Institute Vol. 97 No. 11 805-812)

  • Heart-Related Deaths

Taking pain relievers for six months or more DOUBLES the risk of heart attack and stroke or other heart-related deaths (that's 200% more.) However, ibuprofen users saw a 300% increased risk over non-users. (American Association for Cancer Research conference in Anaheim/Associated Press 4/19/2005)

  • High Blood Pressure

Older women taking 500 mg/day of acetaminophen saw a 93% increased risk of high blood pressure over women who didn't take acetaminophen

Older women taking 500 mg/day of ibuprofen saw a 78% increased risk of high blood pressure over women who didn't take ibuprofen

Younger women taking 500 mg/day of acetaminophen saw a 99% increased risk of high blood pressure over women who didn't take it (Hypertension Sept 2005 46:500)

Sometimes a pain reliever is needed and that is up to the patient and their doctor. But using pain relievers for ongoing pain management is not sustainable.
